I have seen a Formosa with stock surfaces hover, so it can be done. I suppose it is not an ideal 3D plane: it seems to be happier doing smooth "pattern" style aerobatics.

I have not yet made up my mind about when I will get my second Formosa... when I do, I'll probably try to make it look nicer and fly faster. Some people have done pretty impressive modded 'mosas, so I already have some inspiration to start from.
