As an option consider a sail making wholesaler, I found that material picked up from a general store is not really up to the job as far a strength goes, sail material is mainly nylon based (strong) comes in all grades, colours and finishes, in addition you can buy thin foam as this is used to make padded covers for boats etc and edging ribbon which is neatly made so that it folds down the middle.
