I leave my switches set to: (1)on, (2)off, (3)off, (4)off. This will activate the first memory block. I suppose for the overly paranoid you could also back up your programmes in the second block and write-protect them, but I really don't see the need. The serial EEPROMs used in these devices are pretty robust.
