I usually scan in the line drawing that has been in the back of my kit manuals and take that into Autocad and make a full size drawing of it. Then I do my basic layout in autocad. I then do a screen capture of that and take it into Photoshop for the actual coloring part of it. The good thing about doing it this way is I have a full scale pattern to use for cutting out the monokote when I decide on a design. Of course, it helps that I'm an architect and have a large scale plotter to print these out on too.
