Usually you will loose top end performance when the valve tappets get loose. Usually they have to get really big gaps before the engine will be affected on idle and transition.

When the engines are new I run about 2-3 gallons of fuel and check them. Adjust if needed. After about 5-10 gallons I only check them about every 10-15 gallons.
