I believe the training gear, as we call it, makes the heli more stable and really helps prevent it from tipping over if your landings aren't quite under control yet. If you can lift straight up and set down without sliding around you don't need the gear.

I'm not form Taiwan, I'm in the good old Midwest in the USA. The avatar is a scan of the patch that my father wore in WWII when he was in Burma/China. He was in the Air Commandos and they set up airfields behind enemy lines. They could give the patch to a local if they were shot down or captured and escaped and it said that they were friends and to take them to the nearest US airfield.
