Right! That large latch goes around the, to be more specific, perforated (air cooled) barrel shroud on the main body of the M2. The socket is to hold the pintle of the gun's cradle as swathdiver said.

I think the entire M2 could fit in the socket and latch with a spare barrel in the barrel holder. I'm not sure what the SOP was back in those days.
