Is it possible the engine went lean in the air from a loss of muffler pressure or dirt in the needle valve? Did you have a fuel filter installed between the tank and the carb? Was there any scoring or galling of the piston or cylinder?

This wasn't one of thier top of the line engines, I would write it off and look for another on Ebay.
