I have owned several gas engines over the years that didn't have chokes. As noted, a thumb over the carb intake (with the ignition off) for a couple rotations (till your thumb is wet) is all that it takes. Note- you need not flip the prop during this process. A brisk rotation is all you need with a good pumper carb, on most engines. This may require an addition hole in the cowl for this purpose.
