I haven't had problems running the Evolutions in cold weather. I just use a slightly hotter long plug.
It's best to remove the blue collar limiters altogether instead of merely pulling the pin.
If you pull the pin, the limiters will still prevent the needle from traveling "inwards" as you screw it in.
That happens because the blue collar is fixed to the needle, preventing it from moving down.
