I use pushrods like this, but use carbon ''arrow shafts'' instead of wood. The problem with these (wood or carbon) is they tend to vibrate, so I keep them short by putting the servo as far aft as possible.

Use pull-pull for rudder.

For .40 size 2-56 harware is adequate.
