Ok it has been 15 years since actually built a model, so take what I say with a grain of salt. Having said that you mentioned putting the clear film up (and down). I might be wrong but I believe you are supposed to peel that clear film off of the colored material. The surface between the colored film and the clear film is what you place in contact with the wood (etc). This is the side with the adhesive.
