i'v never had a temp gun, from my first nitro to now i'v never used one unless i'v been running at the LHS, just counted how long i can hold onto the top of the heat sink before it's to hot, if i can leave em there i'm running to cold, to hot to touch as soon as i touch it to lean, has always worked for me, i usually don't tune for temp unless it's a hot day.
