I do find Ultracote better to work with over a sheeted surface myself, but if you want to avoid plastic film altogether you might want to try fiberglassing. Pick yourself up some lightweight cloth (.75 oz) and Z Poxy finishing resin. Its completely odorless. After you've glassed it you can shoot it with paint. Lustercote does a pretty good job straight from the can.
