I am about to start a plane which is has its wings sheeted in balsa with balsa fus and tail feathers. Which is the best way to cover it. Its a Toni formula 1 racer. I don't like the finish monocoate gives sheeting.

You might try Ultracoat. Nicer to work with than Monocoat. Has a lightly textured finish which looks more natural. Otherwise its fibreglass and paint which would give it a tougher finish.

I do find Ultracote better to work with over a sheeted surface myself, but if you want to avoid plastic film altogether you might want to try fiberglassing. Pick yourself up some lightweight cloth (.75 oz) and Z Poxy finishing resin. Its completely odorless. After you've glassed it you can shoot it with paint. Lustercote does a pretty good job straight from the can.

Best,
Kelly

Where did you get the plane, if you don't mind me asking?

Thanks

I haven't built the plane yet. I got the plans from a link on this forum. I downloaded them. They are free. I was getting my stuff together before I start it.

This is the link if you want it. You must save each file as a target to your hard drive. Then use a CAD program to open them. I got the free addition of turbocad to do this, a friend of mine is printing the plans 1-1 for me.

Fiberglass and paint it unless you want to see your covering bubbling up every time the sun hits it.
