tmackel, Thanks for the info. I think in my case that the electrical connection had become loose and weak enough to create a high enough resistance to cause the destructive heating problem. One thing not mentioned in my original post is my practice of stuffing sponge rubber around likely areas for possible crash damage prevention. I am now using less sponge rubber and may ventilate my battery areas more.
