The tail rotor is there to counteract the torque from slinging the main blades around-- since they spin clockwise, the heli wants to spin counter-clockwise (turn to the left) from the reaction, so all that's needed to turn left is to slow or stop the motor and around it goes. The tail rotor turns at a middling speed to stay straight, and speeds up to turn right.
