You could cheat, but on a crowded battlefield you risk hitting your own team. If the IR beam was really narrow, you'd have a hard time trying to hit your target. At a range of over 10' the Tamiya Battle Unit (TBU) will only receive hits at 90 degress (0, 90, 180, 270). This is to simulate distant angled shots bouncing off the armor.
