You have to remove the cylinder head from the engine and set it on a small piece of wooden dowel so that the valves won't move. You then push the outer ring of the valve spring retainer down. We made a tool out of a piece of metal tubing that will press all around the outside of the retainer. A light tap with a small tack hammer will pop the retainer loose from the clips.
