Here's an afterthought, but an important one: Selection of where you may wish to live or getting that fantastic job become secondary to some practical issues. Namely the legalities/paperwork involved in moving to the USA. This applies to both leaving Germany and entering the USA. Also, while you may have US Citizenship, the same may not be the case for your son, as you did not mention that. So, as some additional advice, you may want to visit your local US Consulate to verify what really needs to be done. When dealing with bureaucracies as large as DOS and in particular ICE [formerly INS], you may have to add significant time to your most pessimistic forecast as to completion of paperwork. [There even may be a question of a required "sponsorship" .] Then again, you may be lucky.
