Here's how I did it: First you remove the rubber piece from the end of the filter. Then find a wheel collar with i.d. just big enough to fit over the brass tubing. Solder the wheel collar about 1/4" from the end of the brass tube. Grind down the o.d. of the wheel collar until you get an interference fit into the hole on the end of the filter. A slight taper helps.
Force the wheel collar into the end of the filter and use JB Weld to make a fillet around it, like in the picture Mark posted. Make sure the filter and tube are straight and set it aside to cure.
