To get a nice WWI warbird finish, paint ALL parts with Topflite Lusterkote Flat Clear. I painted the cowl, struts, basically everything with it. Take your time and do it in a well vented place outside if possible. You shouldn't paint below 50 deg because it gets gooy and doesn't set well.
This makes repairs harder, as the paint melts if ironed. MAKE SURE TO IRON EVERYTHING BEFORE PAINTING. If you do need to make a repair, and the paint smears (it will), just rub it down with steel wool, and respray the area. Good as new.
