I just got my DP Extra and will use the stock CA hinges. I will just add a few more to give me some comfort. You are right. If it was a design issue, Dave would have used something else. I know that some guys have used Robart type of hinges, but you have to be careful of what you are putting the hinge into. Is there enough wood to hold that TYPE of hinge?

I know also, that some of those guys have opened up the control surface and reinforced the hinge area so they could use the robarts.

If you are going to fly the plane within the speed envelope that it was designed for, (slower aerobatics and 3D), then you will never have a problem.
