Default Servo problem

Maybe it was because it was a Futaba radio.

You say that with a smile but the odd thing is almost every case I have read of the radio was a Futaba T6XAS. Hitec wanted me to send them my radio and I refused. It worked with all my other airplanes with no problems so I didn't see the reason to send my Futaba radio to a Hitec rep. I was using a Hitec RX with all Hitec servos.

Being that Hitec nor myself was able to say definatly that this or that caused it I have went on my own findings. If they are able to pin point this to the Futaba radio not working with a Hitec RX and servos I feel that would be great just because we all will know what caused my loss and those of others.

I can live with losing a plane but at the very least I hope to learn something from the loss and hopfully find the exact cause of it and in this case we were never able to do that.

Default Which Engine

I just got my DP Extra in the mail yesterday. It is perfect! I am still un-decided on the power plant. I was originally going to go with the Moki 1.8 until I found out I can get a Moki 2.10 for the same price. Any suggestions? This is my first BIG plane, so any suggestions/ideas would be welcome.

I went with the Moki 2.10 and was very happy. I would do it again having both the 1.8 and 2.1 at my disposal. However, I had one of the first versions and it could use the nose weight.

I'm using the 1.8 in my new DP Edge due in part to its smaller stature.

Where can I find out more about this CA extra 300L and who sells it?

The dates were August 2001, I was using Futaba T6XAS radio with ATV set at 100% and the servos worked fine the first 4 flights. The only thing I did before the 5th flight was have the servos reset on the programmer like Hitec recommended. I was able to duplicate the problem 4-5 times on my bench but amazingly Hitec said they were unable to get it to fail therefor they seen nothing wrong with the servo. Due to my own findings and the lack of on Hitec's part I have decided not to use their servos until the real problem has been found. As you may know there are many cases out there just like my own with this servo.

I wish I would have video taped my own findings on the bench and sent that to Hitec also but I didn't think of it. Needless to say Hitec replaced the servos per my request and I sold them. It was the first and last time I used Hitec's.

Now I test fly all my new servos, regardless of brand, on a cheap airplane that I'm not afriad to loose. I recently showed up to fly a UCANDO with JR8411's and some guys thought I was nuts until I explained why I had those servos on it. The servos are for my 27% CA Extra 300L that I'm working on.

Ditch all your ideas and look at extreme flights new 85" edge and extra availabile in about a month. They are going to move the bar up on 27-29% airplanes. It would take longer than that to build a columbo

Default DP Extra Hardware

Is there anyone that has a DP Extra 330L that can tell me if they have used the stock hardware that came with the kit, including the CA hinges, and if they are holding up okay? I have used CA hinges on other birds in the past with great results, but I am somewhat hesitant using them on such a big bird. I would hope that Dave would not include them in the kit, if they were not suitabale for this application ??? Thanks.

I just got my DP Extra and will use the stock CA hinges. I will just add a few more to give me some comfort. You are right. If it was a design issue, Dave would have used something else. I know that some guys have used Robart type of hinges, but you have to be careful of what you are putting the hinge into. Is there enough wood to hold that TYPE of hinge?

I know also, that some of those guys have opened up the control surface and reinforced the hinge area so they could use the robarts.

If you are going to fly the plane within the speed envelope that it was designed for, (slower aerobatics and 3D), then you will never have a problem.

Default No

I wouldn't use any of the hardware that came with the kit.
With some of the problems this plane has had I played it safe with Robart hinge points, Nelson hardware and H9 titanium links.
With digital servos and this combination I had no problems and is truly one smooth flying plane.

Default Ailerons

I also opened the ailerons and reinforced the trailing edge with Dave Brown carbon fiber tape. It was a quick fix and really stiffen the ailerons up. I think this was the main cause to the flutter.

I used the stock hardware. The CA hinges on the rudder broke during a blender. I got it down alright but I used the 1/4 scale hinges from Radio South for the repair. If I had it to do again I would use the Radio South hinges throughout. Other then that, no problems. It is a terrific plane.

Excuse my dumb question, but what makes them better than the other hinges out on the market?

Thanks

Jim!

The Robart hinges are stronger, I believe, but I have used CA hinges on this size/type model with no problems over the long haul.
