i actually just cleaned the filter (the foam), and it cleaned up pretty well, so maybe that isn't as much of a concern as i thought. I will get some oil at the hobby shop tomorrow.

As the majority of nitro fuel is methanol, Which is highly hygroscopic (absorbs water), once opened it slowly starts to degrade.
You can try it, but as Da smak said above, to optimise your chances of success change your fuel and plug as well if you can. These are cheap things and will only help the running of the engine. There are ways of storing fuel to make it last longer and now your in the hobby it would serve you well to search out a few threads on fuel, general engine care, types of plugs etc. but for now just optimise as much as you can to increase your chances of success.
