Default RE: DL-50 engine

ORIGINAL: Katana-mini-freak

Hello Guys!

I'm planning on buying a DL-50, to fit a Krill Katana 2,2 m.

Only problem is, that the katana weighs about 8,5 kg. RTF. (About 18-19 lb)

So therefore I was thinking of using an ES-Compisite tuned pipe, to save weight and to increase the power... But, does the DL-50 really get more power with a tuned pipe?

Maybe I should say that I'm planning on flying some hadcore 3D.

My Evolution 26GT has much more power with the tuned pipe, than with a stock muffler.

Many Thanks.

Kristian,

Three things stand out in the case.
1: the plane weight is a bit out of the typical 50cc range
2: You are planning to buy a DL (which saves money), but also want to get an ES Composite pipe (EXCELLENT pipe, by the way) which is somewhat expensive
3: The DL alone is light but the addition of a pipe adds a bit of weight to the system, and also your power demands require the engine to operate at a higher output setting than typical.

If I were you (and this is only MY opinion) you will be better served buying a 3W, ZDZ or DA 80cc/85cc engine. The 80cc engines cost about the same as your engine/pipe plan and the weight increase is very slight.

For instance, my ZDZ 80 on a pitts muffler, including all hardware and ignition, weighs about 2300 g. The DL including all hardware and ignition weighs 1620 g, plus another 250g or so for the pipe and header, so approx 1870 g. This nearly half kilo may seem a big weight addition over the DL, but remember the 80cc engine will spin a 26" prop at roughly the same rpm as the DL will turn a 23". This is a HUGE increase in thrust.

Putting a pipe on the DL may give you a nice power increase, but the more power you extract from the system the more "peaky" it may become. All-out power is nice but 3D really requires instant engine acceleration and a linear power curve.

For the record I also have a DL-50 and like it in my 15# Extra. It is just a bit weak for hardcore 3D in a 19# plane.

Does this help at all?
