well over-heat protection does slow your heli down. It cuts off current to the motor when it hits certain temperature. You can re-program it somehow but i don't know.

Like you said before if your ESC is hot after flight, you may want to change the ESC pretty soon. I had my belt-cp esc melting side of my frame. I believe Eflite ones could work.
