seriously, that sounds way too high for an engine that can you start with a standard starter. can you confirm the reading with another tach?
thats much more rpm than a g-23 with same prop so something must be wrong

I don't know what to tell you Dave - I guess Sullivan is serious when they label it "HI-TORK". Maybe it's just beginner's luck. Also, it was a freshly charged battery.
