A brushless motor has 3 seperate coils, in the can, and the permanent magnets are in the rotor. Those 3 wires are used to send power to 3 seperate coils, typically in a wye (Y) or delta configuration... if your car seems to be going backwards when it should be going forwards, you can swap any two of those wires and the direction should change.
Oh and for sensored brushless like with LRP / novak systems, the color must (or should) be matched, otherwise it will get kinda confused like yours just did.
