My new DL-50 runs well but sometimes kicks back when started. I use a chicken stick. It kicks so hard that the propeller is damaged. This is something that has never happened to me with my other gas engines.
I have checked the timing and it seems to be 28 ˚ before TDC. This is according to the recommendations. On the other side I am surprised that it is supposed to fire so early. My ZDZ engines fire much later when the propeller is moved slowly past TDC.
Could it be something that I have misunderstood?

Make sure you have your prop mounted in the correct orientation. When I first tried to start mine I had the prop mounted out by 90deg and this made it extremely difficult to start and when I could get it to fire it seemed to backfire. As soon as I turned the prop 90deg it started on the first throw without any problem.
