I've used teflon tape (for sealing plumbing threads) as well as masking tape in the past. I wouldn't use any hard materials such as wire that you stated. This adds weight and could possible to damage to the crankshaft. Any soft materials such as I listed will work, including the electrical tape you asked about. Wrap this around the crankshaft until you can slip the prop over the materials. There is no worries about doing this because the materials wrapped around the shaft center the prop, and then the prop nut holds the prop in that position when you tighten it all down.
