RE: Hangar9 P51 PTS trainer
The P-51 PTS makes a good secondary trainer, but is not good for a primary trainer. If you leave the speed brakes off the landing gear and switch to an 11 X 6 prop, it’ll fly pretty OK even with the flaps down. Pull the flaps and it gets much better. Pull the droop tips off and make the flaps functional its good little sport plane.
For use as a secondary trainer, make the flaps functional and initially leave the droop tips on.
You do have to watch the landing gear – it’s a matter of when, not if – it will break out of the wing.
On landing you need to carry a few clicks of power to get a smooth touchdown (and it will 3-point with any issues) and keep on the rudder (on high rate) as it slows. Take-off’s are a piece of cake – just aim it down the runway, hit the power and off it scoots with a straight track thanks to the main gear being so far forward (much like a Sky Raider Mach II).
