Default Hangar9 P51 PTS trainer

What size spinner comes with this RTF? And whats a good size 2 bladed prop? 10x5?

Thanks

The spinner that is included with the P-51 PTS RTF package is a 2 1/4" 3-blade spinner. If you wish to convert your Mustang P-51 PTS RTF to a two-blade setup, I'd recommend trying an 11x6 Master Airscrew S2 Scimitar or APC Sport.

Master Airscrew makes a 10x7 3-blade prop that should work with your stock 3-blade spinner, however, and it should offer substantially better performance than the Evolution 10x4 3-blade prop that came with the plane. There's nothing wrong with 3-blade props generally speaking, just the Evolution trainer props that come with Hangar 9's RTF setups.

How do you like your PTS trainer so far?

I am looking for my first plane, and settled on a Kadet LT-40 but looked at the one you have originally. I was talked out of it though by many members in my club. They said it was difficult to learn on.

My thinking was, why buy two planes, a really slow trainer I'll outgrow and then a second plane that's more capable when someone makes a trainer that can be made capable by removing the few add-ons that make it a trainer. Plus, it's a slick looking airplane!

The Kadet LT-40 is one of the very finest trainers available today. I posted a couple of float flying videos of guys who put floats on their LT-40s here on the RC Universe video section:

If you don't like flying a Kadet LT-40, then you just plain don't like flying!

I have to admit, I've been really curious about this "PTF" flying system and how well it does... It sounds like this discussion doesn't really have a resolution yet. I'd LOVE to be able to buy 1 plane and "upgrade" it into a full blown hotrod P51. I've seen "good" pilots fly P51's and they are awesome to watch! I've also seen "experienced" pilots fly a P51 and WOW!!!! You could tell IN A HURRY that those are not the easiest birds to control !!!!

I've got to get ALOT of flight time and experience in before I can fly MY favorite planes (1) the P40 and (2) the P38 and (3) the Mosquito (I'm a military history aircraft buff to the core!)

If anyone gets anymore information about how the PTF system works/performs, let us know!

The hangar 9 P51 PTS is serviceable as a trainer, with an apt student. It's really not that bad, but it's got a few characteristics that are less than perfect for training.

With all the training aids installed (air brakes, naca droops, 3 blade prop), it will fly slowly and stall gently, but I found it's performance to be a bit wanting, just too draggy and not enough thrust from the PTS prop. It will self-correct to a certain degree, but by no means as quickly or positively as a good traditional trainer.

With the aids removed, it actually becomes a pretty nice sport plane. It has some weakness especially in the LG mounts (shown up easily by the nube attempting to land her!), but this can be fixed pretty easily. To me, tho, there are better sport scale mustangs. Without the proper nose slope curve (the top of the nose profile in the PTS is straight), and with too long a tail section, it looks a bit goofy to me.

It is definately NOT the best trainer out there, not even close. It is pretty to look at and many can learn on it though, so it continues to be popular. I'd hazard a guess that the average PTS mustang life span is about 2/3rds that of a traditional trainer design.

Really, that Sr. Falcon you've got will make a superior trainer. Many people here (newbies) have it in their mind that a trainer can do little more than gentle circles, the odd loop and a touch'n'go or 2. Set up with a proper CG location (most are nose-heavy), adequate power (most have this already), and adequate control throws, almost any trainer is capable of surprisingly advanced aerobatics, including snaps, spins, loops, rolls, inverted flight (even high dihedral flat bottom wings!) and lots more. Harder to do perfectly, but what you learn on it will keep you amused and put you in the best spot for that hot aerobat or warbird of your dreams.

I have a mustang, a giant, a half-a flying boat. I still fly my trainer most. I do need a nice aerobat, tho....

The PTS mustang is a blast to fly. Im new to the hobby and learned on the mustang. Im an old fart of 40 who came over from offroad R/C racing. I picked it up pretty fast. I was advised by the guys who trained me to take the 3 blade prop off and put a 2 blade on it (for get out of trouble power), remove the speed brakes, and fix the flaps to level. Leave the wing droops on it. I learned with this setup and have 2 other birds I fly. Twist 40 and P-47 thunderbolt 60. I still turn to the mustang for several flights when im at the field. Its just too fun to not put her in the air. I went with the RTF version and the evolution engine has been a great little power plant so far. I have had no issues with landing gear blocks like alot of people have. With the wing droops on, the plane floats in really nice. Especially with a head wind. The only mishap I have had was the muffler came loose and I lost pressure to the fuel tank on an upline and the engine died. I wasnt up high enough and landed it in a bush. It had some minor cracks in the fuse that were fixed in an hour. My fault for not checking the muffler bolts. I even used loctite. I got away pretty cheap for having my first crash. I inspect my planes alot closer now. Newbie mistake. The rtf came with the sim for the plane and while it was very helpful for learning landings and thumb movement, its alot different on take off. The real plane requires more right rudder input than the sim.
Alot of guys will say its not a good trainer, but I found it simple to learn with. Its like alot of thing we do in life. Some people can pick it up quickly, while others struggle and take a bit longer to learn. The way I look at it is, if you want to give it a try, go for it. What most of us write on here are only our opinions. They can differ from person to person. Not everyone will agree on everything. If your interested in the little stang, go for it. Just take your time and be patient.

I'm currently learning on the PTS Mustang. If you can fly it well on the sim, it's not a difficult transition. I have not noticed a lack of power with it, as most people have. If you're experienced with nitro engines, or have an instructor that will help you tune it, you can use a pair of pliers to remove the limiting pins from the high and low speed needles and tune it for better performance. I was able to perform a nice loop with it without much of an altitude loss before the loop. It was configured flaps up (I'm using a flap servo) with the rest of the training aids in place. For basic patterns and approaches, it flies better in that configuration, with the exception of flaps down. Being a noob, I have had several rough landings and the landing gear have held up well. I've only had to repair the block inside the wing once, and that was after a very rough deadstick when the right main gear was pushed back. I'm loving it, and I would expect many other noobies will to.

The P-51 PTS makes a good secondary trainer, but is not good for a primary trainer. If you leave the speed brakes off the landing gear and switch to an 11 X 6 prop, it’ll fly pretty OK even with the flaps down. Pull the flaps and it gets much better. Pull the droop tips off and make the flaps functional its good little sport plane.

For use as a secondary trainer, make the flaps functional and initially leave the droop tips on.

You do have to watch the landing gear – it’s a matter of when, not if – it will break out of the wing.

On landing you need to carry a few clicks of power to get a smooth touchdown (and it will 3-point with any issues) and keep on the rudder (on high rate) as it slows. Take-off’s are a piece of cake – just aim it down the runway, hit the power and off it scoots with a straight track thanks to the main gear being so far forward (much like a Sky Raider Mach II).

I live in Canada and my brother lives in Australia. He is the one getting the P-51. I told him to purchase the Kadet LT-40 but he will not listen and is getting that mustang. I had the Alpha 60 with the evo.61 and the engine is JUNK!!!! Nothing but problems with the muffler and NV. Thats why I told him to stay away from that P-51 PTS. But he does not listen so what can I say

The Lt 40 is the way to go and if you like the PTS as a second plane. One showed up at our field and it was OK but hard to repair.
The basic trainer is seldom truly mastered. An Lt 40 with 1/2 the dihedral and a little extra rudder is a ton o fun!

I've got an Alpha 60 with the Evolution .61 and it's been one of the best, most reliable .61's I've had. Fires right up on a hand start - no starter required, runs very strong and never misses a beat. I did remove the limiter pins and do a proper run-in before I flew it - on flight on the 3-blade just for kicks to see how poorly it preformed then switched over to a 12 X 6. After 11 flights it hit the true break-in point where I had to reset the needles and haven't had to touch them since.

I love the PTS Mustang! But to be honest I never flew one with the training aids. I started with an Alpha 60 and went right to the PTS with no aids. Installed the flap servo and the thind is a blast

FWITW I flew it with an 12X6 APC

Same here, A60 does a great job with a 12X6 and .61

I put in a OS .91 and a 13X8 prop

Look through the currently 249 pages of this tread and tell me this pane isn't what its sold as. Some of the active posters have started from nothing and progress to overpowered pattern competition with the SAME AIRFRAME! I have gone from nothing, no instructor, no filed, no sim. To flying from my yard, 5 total planes fro the PTS to an 87" gasser, and a few in between. Anyone who says the P51 isnt a trainer ISNT qualified to state an opinion, much less instruct anyone.

I love it, I'm using same Evo engine and the prop I was using APC 11X6, a senior guy told me that use 10X7, now I'm using APC 10X7 could not fly due to heavy wind, this week seems to be going to be a waste as well due to raining. I know with 10X7 the revs would be high and plane would fly fast. I'm not using flaps, they are neutral, no droops on the leading edge but same engine. I love this plane, it's good for a second plane. Though I've been flying for the last 5 years, but I still love to fly it.

I used too 11x6 with Evo and liked it! Now with the OS 55 AX-BE is great! More torque and less fuel. Ethanol based. I think in Japan they use it since 2007.

See Ya Mody.

Prolly in future I'd replace the Evolution with Magnum .46 XLS or JBA .56. I never heard of ethanol based fuel. Back in my country, we used to use 80% methanol and 20% Castor oil thats it.
