If you set it as the "O" ring end as the OUT the dirt if there is any finishes up on the outside of the filter screen, making it easier to clean.
The above condition can cause the filter screen to collapse on itself (as I was warned by a Jetcat rep)

The O-ring end should always be the IN side so fuel puts outward pressure on the filter basket.
