I would say, you have a great attitude. You are probably right, the guy felt bad and didn't know what to say. There is also the possibility couldn't gauge your reaction, so he stayed away. You may want to reach out to him next time at the field, just to make sure all is well and to show there is no hard feelings. Please post some pictures of the rebuid, or at least of the completed rebuild.
