Since I have a “new” tank on the way I’ve been pondering, “what if it has an RX13 board and not an RX14?” and stuff.
My original Tiger has an RX14 board and I removed the smoke unit because it died and left its power connector available for other uses. When the other tank arrives I will probably take the smoker out and fit it into the first tank. No matter, there will be a spare power connector available anyway. This type of connector is used very commonly in PCs to connect a cooling solution to the North Bridge (one of the computer chipsets that runs quite warm); it’s often a fan/ heat sink combination and would be suitable for our use on both RX13 and 14 boards.
The heat sink/ fans would be perfect for the RX13 and a fan on it’s own would be good for the RX14. The best news is that these readily available chipset coolers come (normally) with the same connector that HL uses for the dreaded smoke unit.
Anyone who has dumped the smoke unit has the perfect connection to fit a cooling solution to either board without soldering more wire inside the poor tank. It will be switched of course, so you will have to pay attention to the switch if you want the fan to run all the time. Get creative!
Dump those smokers and add some extra cooling![X(]
If you feel like it.
