I have one of the original ones with the skinny lugs and the extruded mounts. Could I get a replacement rear casr half with the thick lugs and and put it on? Anyone tried this??

...you can also PM rfabbre on here. A while back, before the thicker rear case was available on DLs, he machined up some aluminum backplates that doubled up the rear case area you speak of, with standoffs, bolts, etc. He may still have some...very reasonable price, good guy to work with.
