Ken - have you considered a Super Sportster? The criteria that you are taking about - Basic old school pattern flying, solid knife edge ability, Good aerobatic ability but doesn't need to be a hover plane, and the wing airfoil needs to be thin enough to allow for some good speed can be met by the SS. I have a .61 2S in my 40 size (its also 15+ years old) and don't worry about speed. We had a deputy Sheriff stop by the club a couple of weeks ago, he used a radar on mine - 80+ MPH straight and level (flying into a moderate headwind). He couldn't get a good shot at the plane coming out of dive, but figure 100-110+ mph.
Just food for thought if you want to get in the air - get an ARF SS.
Not a pitch for Tower Hobbies or Great Planes - but I know that mine is a good airframe and it does what I want it to do. I think this is the 3rd or 4th that I've had over the years.
