Might be worth opening up the MF unit and tracing the pins to see if their hardwired to power, inputs directly to the processor, or switched by FETs.
I'd consider opening up my Sherman MF unit, but it's stuck to the chassis with some seriously nasty double-sided tape.

When I removed mine from the bottom of the Tiger, the plastic box had cracks all over its body. That tape is really nasty.
