Get rid of all the wires. The one to the glow starter and the one to the electric starter (if you use it). Sure, you can come up with safety rules to follow to make those wires less probable to get caught in the prop, but if they aren't there to get caught........... If they aren't there, the really big benefit is mobility. Where you can easily start the plane is wherever the plane is.
I a relative newcomer and in the 8 months I've been flying have come to the same conclusion. I bought a box with a panel, 12V motorcycle battery, starter and electric pump. You've got to be real careful with the cords and I'm going to replace my corded glow starter with a battery type. Will probably still hang on to the other and keep the 12V charged because I like the meter on the panel and it let's you know instantly if a broken plug is why the engine isn't starting.
Sullivan makes a battery pack that will fit my starter and uses 12 1.2V 1500MaH sub C's. Probably going to get those as well so that I've got no cords running to the front of the plane while starting it.
