The one with the throttled .15 is most likely a carrier plane. Back in the day, they had competitions where they would take off from a deck, fly as fast as the plane could go, fly as slow as it could go, then land back on the deck. I have a carrier kit that I purchased of eBay a couple of years ago, but I haven't built it yet.
