RE: Chip Hyde's Cap-X - Building & Flying
Well, I thought I'd post, just to keep the thread going. A few posts ago, someone asked if anyone was still flying their CAP-X. It is my "usual" plane, and I try to get out every weekend with it, until the dismal winter of Wisconsin sets in, which is just about now. I have a FPE 2.4, with Hitec 625/645s in mine. This is my first successful gas plane, and my glow fuel expenditure has dropped to a couple gallons a season as a result. I still get the old glow profile out occasionally, but this airplane is head and shoulders above anything I've ever flown. I bought a second one just now off RCU it was damaged in shipping unfortunately. Almost fixed, so I can start assembly. With the backup, I think I can allow myself to let go with this one to improve my skills.
No lead, balanced just fine.
At the end of season one, I noticed a little slop in recovery from a snap on one flight, and after landing, realized that the entire left elevator half was held on by the center CA hinge. I guess the inner and outers just wore out. Replaced with pinned hinges, and have had no issues.
I very much recommend this plane to guys moving up from glow sport planes to gas, and 3D. When you get into a harrier for the first time, which works on this ship just fine with no wing rocking ... whew! The smile on your face just cannot be wiped off.
Chip, if you are out there ... thanks again!
