RE: Goldberg Extra 300
Mine is an old kit bought three years ago for the Saito 91 that was on it from an estate sale. It was flown a lot by it's owner and had a lot wear and tear. It was missing the cowling and wheel pants and had a rather odd color scheme. At the time that I bought it I really didn't care about the plane as the engine was destined for a Midwest Super Stearman kit that I had bought at a club auction. After hanging up in the cellar for a couple of years, I acquired a new OS 61 FX 2-stroke and decided to see if I could get this plane flying again. The radio system was the old AM unit and the electronics were very old. I replaced all the servos and wire harnesses along with a new battery pack and receiver and flew it the start of this season. It is great fun and even with it's small control surfaces and limited throws it performs very well for my taste and skill. The color scheme I mentioned was designed by the owners two young children and includes their favorite colors of pink and light blue. The fuselage was all white and had no cowling. I purchased a new one from Fiberglass Specialties and cut it to fit the OS 61 with a Bisson 90 size pitts muffler. I flew it that way through the summer and enjoyed it very much. The problem was the all white fuselage gave very little contrast when right side up or inverted. Since the season has pretty much ended I decided to add some graphics to it with black covering on the bottom and partly up the sides with black-blue-pink stripes going up and over the turtledeck behind the canopy. The canopy is in rough shape and I was able to reinforce it and add a new trailing edge which had chipped and cracked. I have painted the cowling white and plan to add black graphics to accent the stripes coming up from the tail. I also cut the rudder loose and removed the covering and repaired old damage from flips onto it's back. It had been repaired by taking off sections of covering but it was rather weak and looked like a quilt with all the patches. It's now all black and has new Robart pin pinges installed.
Here are some pictures from when I started working on it to it's first flights to the current covering additions.
The best part is showing up at the different model fields and having two or three guys come over and exclaim... 'Hey, I had one of these a long time ago...it was my first aerobatic plane..." I usually let them fly it and it always puts a smile on their faces.
