Welcome to r/c combat! [8D] It's a blast for sure.
One thing I would recommend is flying combat with .15's or .25's. The planes are just-as or more competitive with the small motors if designed for them. When two .40 engines hit head-on, it's not pretty, believe me!
I fly mainly the popular .15-size SSC class because the equipment is cheaper and everything is even more survivable, but there is also a ton of activity with .25's in "limited B."
The principle behind both of these classes is that the
minimum weight means you can build a really durbale plane, and the max RPM prevents an arms-race, so it's all about each guys' flying and not who's got a super-hot engine. Except for official 'sanctioned contests', we fly informal club combat, just going up for cuts and have a great time!
