There are a lot of good 325mm (450 size) helis out there, not just the TRex. My current favorite in that size is the Mini Titan (TT E325), because it's inexpensive, very smooth and strongly aerobatic. You probably have the radio gear already, but if not, the Blade 400 RTF (with Spektrum TX) is pretty popular, too.
No, when set up with decent equipment for hard aerobatics, you have to beat a heli with a collective-pitch tail pretty badly to blow out the tail, if you even can. That depends on how you set it up, of course- if you dial down the gyro to fly smoother pattern or F3C style, then it changes things.
