Sorry for your loss.....

One budy of mine lost his F16 flying Fasst. He had both small antennas outside the airplane arguing that he would get a better signal that way[&:] After the crash he realised that the antenna cover had suffered a hit and the metal mesh inside collapsed thus inducing lack of signal. Bottom end is:

he thinks that he damaged the antenna mesh. Here is a video from the crash

There are several other guys using the fasst with no issue. I myself will change one of these days....

I noticed that the turbine was running he entire time. Did your friend have failsafe/turbine shutdown enabled? If he did have it enabled then the cause of the may not have been loss of signal.
