If there's a doll house shop anywhere near you, go there. Often they will have many different types of wood in various sizes and thicknesses. Some will have a very tight grain, and can be used for the block. Also, for the cleaning rods, same source, or some hobby shops have a selection of wood dowels in quite small sizes of various woods.
