Michaels is a chain of craft stores. They have a fairly nice selection of balsa and basswood in many shapes and sizes. That is a great picture of the original, looks like they used two pieces attached with metal straps. Looks like two butcher blocks. It was probably easier to find the smaller thickneses of wood than one very thick one. Some basswood would do the trick.
