I've been involved with organizing a Fun Fly from 1982 until around 1996. It was a very laid back event and had more to do with eating and B.S.ing than anything else. I don't know if Fun Flys were considered contests; or, if they were supposed to be organized by CDs back then. If they were, then we were surely rule breakers back then!
