I'm not quite sure what the "pie piece" is that you are referring to. Sounds like a full width spar at the tips. That should also provide some reinforcement.

The main area that is weak is the glue joint at the tips. The fiberglass provides reinforcement at that joint plus provides some protection against hanger rash.

I ran the grain of the wood with the span of the wing. This should make it less likely to break on the wood tip.
